Attendance Policy
ATTENDANCE POLICY
At Paragon Collegiate Academy, we view each day as an essential learning opportunity. A significant part of your child’s educational experience is derived
from classroom participation, activities, discussion and relationships. Regular attendance is crucial for your child to attain the maximum benefit from the school
experience. Therefore, we expect excellent attendance from our students. Missing school regularly not only is detrimental to a child’s learning, but also can
create poor learning habits.
In an effort to continue our dedication to improve academic skills, social, and emotional growth, school personnel will carefully monitor and enforce student
attendance. It is imperative that parent(s) and/or guardian(s) contact the school to verify student absences. If the school is not notified and the student
does not report to school the next day with a note, the absence will be considered unexcused. The school office should be informed promptly if your child has
a communicable disease so that we can notify other parents, if necessary.
Excused Absences
1. Student Illness or Injury (Students should be fever-free, with no vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours before returning).
2. Medical, Dental, Vision or Chiropractic appointment.
3. Quarantine under the direction of a county or city health officer.
4. Attendance at a funeral of a member of the student’s immediate family.
5. Justifiable personal reasons (i.e., appearance in court, observance of religious events, etc.).
6. Spending time with a member of the student’s immediate family who is an active duty member of the uniformed services and has been called to duty
for, is on leave from, or has immediately returned from, deployment to a combat zone or combat support position. (Period of time to be determined at
discretion of the school administrator)
7. Attendance at the student’s naturalization ceremony to become a United States citizen.
8. Authorized at the discretion of a school administrator.
Unexcused Absences
1. The missing of class or school without an excused reason, whether it is pupil or parent initiated.
2. An absence, which the school is not notified and the student does not report to school the next day with a note.
3. An absence for which advanced approval is necessary and approval was not obtained before absence.
4. The failure of a pupil to be in the assigned location when class begins.
Excessive Absence Policy
1. When a student has excused absences in excess of 10 days within the school year, any further absences for illness must be verified by a
physician. Failure to provide verification will result in absences being recorded as unexcused.
2. The school may institute actions intended to improve the student’s attendance beginning with the third unexcused absence in a school year. These
interventions may include referral to intervention personnel and/or referral to the School Attendance Review Board (SARB). Ed Code 46011.
3. The school may institute an attendance contract, after the first notice of truancy.
Make-up Work Guidelines
When absences occur, it is the responsibility of the student and parent to make arrangements to make up missed work. Parents of younger children are
encouraged to be involved in assuring that arrangements are made. Please contact the school office by 9:00 a.m. for make-up work to be picked up
after school.
Students have the same number of days as they were absent to make-up work. Quizzes and tests must be made up on the day the student returns to school
unless other arrangements are made with the teacher. Other arrangements may be made with the teacher for make-up work due to long-term illness or other
special circumstances.
Early-Dismissal
If your child must leave school early because of a health appointment, please notify their teacher in advance, and upon picking up the student, please sign
your child out in the office. Please try to schedule appointments during non-school hours whenever possible.
Tardy Policy
School begins at 8:00 a.m. each day. It is important to be on time to school. A student must report to the office if he or she is late for school and their
parent(s) must sign the student in, indicating the reason for the tardy.
To encourage students to develop the character trait of punctuality, the following has been established.
1. Tardiness is only excused if a student has a medical, dental, legal appointment or there has been an emergency/death in the family. All excused
tardies require appropriate documentation.
2. A student missing more than 30 minutes of the school day without a valid excuse on 3 occasions in one school year shall be classified as truant.
Unexcused tardies are those tardies other than those described above. PCA may require a student to make up the missed instructional time when tardiness
becomes excessive. Parent(s)/Guardian(s) will be notified in advance before a student is required to make up the missed time.
